Scientists have continually tried to establish a connection between music and mathematics, but they were unsuccessful until a few years ago, when Prof Dmitri Tymoczko from Princeton University discovered that there is actually a strong link between them.

Along with other scientists, Prof Tzmoczko managed to develop a method to analyze and categorize music in order to reduce it to a mathematical kernel.

This breakthrough might lead to a better understanding of the bonds between different musical genres because this new interpretation allows us to categorize notes, chords, rhythms and scales into “families”.
