Nanoparticles in socks could be toxic

16 April 2008 11:18

nanoparticles.jpgNanotechnology is one of the fastest growing technologies, showing a very high potential. In spite of the positive effects it might have, such as providing the answer to curing cancer or even developing cloaking devices, some critics say that nanotechnology will have a negative impact on the environment.

Researchers from the Arizona State University have proved that silver nanoparticles, which can be found in shoes and socks can end up in local water supplies due to washing machines. Engineers at ASU say that the ionic silver kills fish, because it disrupts their blood and tissue chemistry.

This is not 100% certain for now, but further research will show if silver nanoparticles are enviromentally friendly.
