MARSIS Studies the underground of Mars

23 April 2008 16:20

mars.jpgEven though astronomers can now map the surface of Mars, getting information about the underground has proved to be quite difficult. To this end, a new technology that can achieve this has been created - MARSIS, EPA’s Mars Express radar sounder.

MARSIS stands for Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding, and it managed to scan the underground of the planet Mars, which gives astronomers new insights. The interesting thing is that even the developers were surprised by the fact that MARSIS worked, before a radar sounder hadn’t been used on any other planets before.

MARSIS is the result of a collaboration between Europe and America, and this new technology might also prove useful for analyzing Antarctica’s ice sheets.
